In Chesterfield, the spire is the only thing that should lean.

Every corner, reveal and edge we render is set to a line first.

A rendered wall is judged on its edges. Before any render goes on, we fix beads at every corner, round every window and door and along the bottom of the wall, and check each one with a level. Those lines are what make the finished house look sharp from across the road.

  • Corners plumb and sharp from the ground to the eaves
  • Window reveals the same depth all the way round
  • A bead along the base, kept clear of the ground
  • Mesh in the base coat, with extra across every window corner
  • No ripples when the low sun runs across the wall

Houses round here

Chesterfield has a bit of everything, and each type of wall wants something slightly different.

Brick terraces

Victorian and Edwardian rows in Brampton, Hasland, Whittington Moor and the old colliery villages. Rear offshots and gable ends benefit most.

1930s semis

Bay-fronted semis in Walton, Newbold and Brockwell, many still in roughcast or pebbledash that can be covered.

Post-war estates

Loundsley Green, Inkersall, Holme Hall and similar, often with dashed finishes that have cracked and dulled.

Stone cottages

Gritstone and sandstone towards Holymoorside, Barlow and Ashover. These need lime so the walls can breathe.

Common questions

How much does it cost to render a house in Chesterfield?

We price each job after seeing it, because the size of the walls, their height, what is on them now and the render system all change the figure. You get one written price with scaffold included.

If we find something during the job that could not be seen at the visit, we show you and agree it before going further.

My walls have cracked from ground movement. Can render cope with that?

Much of the area around Chesterfield was mined for coal, and some houses have moved over the years. If the movement has stopped, a meshed render system with movement joints in the right places copes well. If cracks are still getting wider, you need a structural engineer to look first, and we will tell you that rather than render over it.

Do I need planning permission to render my house?

On a typical house outside a conservation area, usually not. Listed buildings always need consent. The town centre and a number of villages have conservation areas, so check with Chesterfield Borough Council or North East Derbyshire District Council before you commit.

Can you render a stone house?

Yes, but it needs the right material. Gritstone and sandstone houses towards the Peak have solid walls that must be able to dry out. Lime render lets them breathe. Cement render on those walls can trap damp, which is often why older render on stone cottages fails.

How long will a rendering job take?

A terraced front or a gable end is usually a few days. A whole semi is typically a week to ten days with scaffold. The weather can move things, because render cannot go on in frost or heavy rain. Your quote gives expected dates.

Is the rendering guaranteed?

Yes. New rendering comes with a 10-year warranty. The details are written on your quote, so you know exactly what is covered before any work starts.

Can you match my neighbour's render?

Usually, yes. Point out the house and we will look at its texture and colour, then bring sample boards to compare against it.

Do you clean up after?

Yes. Windows, doors, paths and plants are covered before we start. We tidy every day, and the site is cleared when the scaffold comes down.
